E-Filing News

New IRS e-Filing Requirements

New IRS e-filing requirements coming soon. "David Williams, IRS director of electronic tax administration and refundable credits, promised that proposed regulations for the e-filing mandate enacted by lawmakers last year will come soon and will include details about exemptions and hardship waivers. The mandate requires that return preparers who reasonably expect to file more than 10 returns in 2011 file them electronically. Williams said, however, that the IRS will require only those return preparers who anticipate filing 100 returns to e-file in 2011 and will move to full implementation in 2012."

Let us help you get a head start on getting compliant. In order to electronically file in ProSeries you must have an IRS-issued Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN). To obtain one, you simply need to register through the IRS. (Based on the time of year, the process can take anywhere from 20 to 45+ days.)

If you are new to e-filing, we recommend you visit Intuit Academy and watch the "Get Ready to e-File" module under Online Self-Paced Training. It will guide you through the four easy steps to prepare to e-file:

  1. Get your EFIN from the IRS.
  2. Get e-file instructions from applicable states.
  3. Set up an Internet connection on the computer from which you will be e-filing.
  4. Set up ProSeries for e-filing.
ProSeries e-Filing is included for no additional charge across supported individual and business forms for unlimited and pay-per-return licenses. For more information, please view our ProSeries e-Filing page.
